ACARE's Purpose

What is Advisory Council for Aviation Research and Innovation in Europe (ACARE):

  • unique, open, independent European expert discussion platform that considers national and global developments in European aviation research and innovation.
  • represents the “voice of European aviation stakeholders” providing balanced, cross-sector advice from and for aviation.

ACARE’s mission

  • develop balanced, coherent, strategic outputs with the intent to help decision makers to make the right decision
  • which ultimately should help European aviation to fulfil its societal role to provide safe, sustainable and affordable air transport within Europe and by European airlines,
  • whilst ensuring we keep and further develop aeronautical engineering skills needed to develop, build and maintain current and future aircrafts and air mobility services.

Who?

ACARE unites all European aviation stakeholders namely:

  • EU Member States
  • universities
  • research and technology organisations (RTOs)
  • design and manufacturing industry
  • energy and service providers
  • repair and overhaul (MRO) organisations
  • air service navigation organisations
  • airlines
  • airports

The European Commission consults ACARE on a regular basis.

What does ACARE do:

  • provides balanced, cross-sector advice from and for aviation
  • takes into account national and global developments
  • provide scientific/knowledge-based foresight and advice to the political level and, where appropriate, stakeholders on vision and strategy documents
  • monitor progress towards the formulated objectives

Why is ACARE needed:

  • facilitate European political and regulatory decision-making processes by
    • contributing to a better perception of technological possibilities in order to facilitate European political and regulatory decision-making processes
    • explaining policy effects on European competitiveness and the operational execution
  • support European aviation in meeting the needs of society
  • strengthen European leadership (including education, workforce) and sovereignty
  • set standards worldwide as a one-stop-shop for all aviation issues
More about ACARE
Publication of a "Vision of the European Aviation System" every 10 years (e.g. Fly the Green Deal)
Publication of a "Status and Outlook of the European Aviation System" for each new Commission (every 5 years)
Preparation of strategic technology roadmaps (formerly SRIAs)
Publication of 'Position Papers' on occasion (e.g., the recommended Position Paper regarding Framework Programme 10 (FP10) expected after the revival of ACARE in 2025)
Participation in consultations (e.g., on the Framework Programmes (FP), or Member State national programmes)
